DUBAI – Emirates’ $5 billion retrofit programme is reshaping the passenger experience across its global fleet of 219 aircraft, combining advanced technology, redesigned cabins, and enhanced comfort across all travel classes.
The initiative is more than a cosmetic upgrade; it represents a full-scale reconfiguration of aircraft interiors designed to elevate inflight experience on every level.
Full cabin transformation
Each aircraft undergoes a complete interior overhaul, with old fittings removed and replaced by newly designed cabins. This includes refreshed washrooms, upgraded lighting systems, additional storage space, and redesigned cabin layouts aimed at improving passenger comfort and movement throughout the aircraft.
Premium Economy expansion
A key highlight of the retrofit is the rollout of Premium Economy across the entire fleet. The cabin features wider reclining seats, adjustable headrests, leg and footrests, personal charging points, and 13.3-inch entertainment screens. Dining is served on linen table settings, accompanied by a curated beverage selection including wines and Chandon sparkling wine.
Ultra-fast connectivity
Emirates is installing Starlink Wi-Fi across its aircraft, delivering complimentary high-speed internet at cruising altitude. Passengers will be able to stream content, access social media, make calls, play games, and work seamlessly during flights without additional charges.
Next-generation screens
From October 2026, selected aircraft will feature 4K OLED HDR10+ seatback screens across 60 Airbus A380s and 51 Boeing 777s. These displays offer enhanced colour depth and improved sound quality, compatible with both Emirates headsets and Bluetooth-enabled personal devices.
Economy cabin upgrades
Economy Class will introduce Safran Z400 seats designed for improved ergonomics and reduced weight. The seats feature an eight-way adjustable headrest, increased leg support, and upgraded in-seat charging options to enhance passenger comfort on long-haul journeys.
Business Class refinement
Business Class cabins are being upgraded with seats inspired by Safran’s S Lounge design. These include increased privacy, integrated wireless charging, ambient lighting controls, additional storage compartments, minibar features, and multiple charging ports including USB-C.
First Class suites
First Class continues to be positioned as a private suite experience, featuring electronically controlled doors, adjustable lighting, and individual temperature control. Onboard shower facilities and lounge seating on A380 aircraft further enhance exclusivity, alongside upgraded Bowers & Wilkins E2 noise-cancelling headphones.
Fleet-wide scale
To date, 94 aircraft have already been completed, with 125 remaining in the programme pipeline. Each Boeing 777 requires approximately 18 days to retrofit, while Airbus A380 aircraft take around 22 days due to their larger double-deck configuration.
Engineering-led execution
All refurbishment work is carried out by Emirates’ in-house engineering teams, making it one of the largest airline-led retrofit operations globally. The process involves round-the-clock shifts and precise coordination to minimise aircraft downtime while maintaining operational schedules.
Global rollout destinations
The upgraded aircraft are already flying to 40 destinations including London, Miami, Tokyo, Johannesburg, and Kuala Lumpur, with 10 additional cities including Karachi, Milan, Brisbane, and Singapore set to be introduced as the rollout continues.
